Three CASNR students participate in congressional internship program
Three outstanding students will be representing the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources this semester in Washington D.C. From mid-January to early May, they'll experience the daily workings of the nation's capital.
"The government internship program is one of the most unique student programs that the colllege has for CASNR students," said Lori Dudley, coordinator of student development in the Dr. Bill Bennett Student Success Center.
Lorena Martinez, a sophomore agricultural and applied economics major, said she considers the opportunity to serve as a government intern to be one of her greatest accomplishments so far at Texas Tech. She will be working at the House Committee on Agriculture.
"I wanted to be an intern because I felt that it would offer me a great learning experience that could not compare to that of the atmosphere offered through this program," Martinez said. "After receiving word that I had been selected, I was felt very honored and blessed to have had the internship committee feel that I was a good fit to serve as one of this year's interns."
In addition to Martinez, this year's spring interns include Karen Kroesen, a junior natural resources management major, and Allen Thompson, a senior agricultural communications major. Both will serve in the offices of Congressman Mike Conaway (R-TX 11).
Kroesen echoed the excitement for the opportunity. "I am honored to be selected as one of the CASNR Government Interns," Kroesen said. "I know this opportunity will open many doors for me and I am looking forward to taking part in the legislative process."
CASNR interns live in the "Tech House" during their stay in Washington D.C., which is located just over a block from the Capitol Building. Their living expenses are offset through scholarships from generous donors, including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Texas Corn Producers Board, Plains Cotton Growers, Texas Corn Growers, Texas Peanut Producers, Dan Taylor, Texas Farm Bureau, and South Texas Cotton and Grain, as well as others.
