Richardson rounds up 'All-Around Champion Cowgirl' title in Weatherford
Continuing the lead they secured last fall, Texas Tech's Women's Rodeo Team won the overall championship at the Weatherford College & Ranger College Rodeo this weekend (Mar. 1-3) in Weatherford. Team member Carley Richardson, a junior animal science major from Pampa, was crowned the Women's All-Around Champion Cowgirl.
"Richardson's first place finish in go-round one of the breakaway calf roping and third place overall finish in the barrel racing event helped the team win with an overall score of 450 points," said Texas Tech Rodeo Team Coach Chris Guay.
Hayley Nelson, a senior English major from Channing, managed to maintain her lead in the southwest regional barrel racing standings by placing first overall out of the 112 barrel racing contestants. Additionally, Nelson's teammates Jessica Frost and Cecily Crouch both placed in overall barrel racing, third and sixth respectively. Frost is a native of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Crouch is from Midland; both are majoring in animal science.
Senior exercise and sports science major Bailey Guthrie continued her lead in the southwest region standings for the goat tying event. The Rigby, Id. native was able to secure the overall championship at the event after winning first in go round one and then fourth in the finals.
