"As a steadfast and committed member of the community, Texas Tech strives to promote sustainability efforts that will preserve and protect our resources. The university is dedicated to educating its faculty, staff and students to reduce, reuse and recycle now and well into the future," according to a university statement on sustainability.
When Texas Tech first started, most of the funds went towards the buildings, but the campus was lacking landscaping. In 1937, then President Bradford Knapp decided to dedicate one day every spring to beautifying the campus. Thousands of trees and landscape plants have been planted since that time. Arbor Day activities are sponsored by Tech's Student Union & Activities, Hospitality Services, Center for Campus Life, Grounds Maintenance and the Tech Activities Board.
