Advisory Council taps AFS's Brashears for 16th Texas Tech President Search
Mindy Brashears, director of Texas Tech's International Center for Food Industry Excellence, has been selected to serve on a 26-member advisory council to assist in selecting the next president of Texas Tech. Brashears, who is also a professor in Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences, is nationally known for developing a treatment shown to reduce food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli in processed beef and poultry.
"The advisory council will serve as a valuable resource to our search process," said System Chancellor Kent Hance. "This group of individuals will offer a variety of perspectives as we seek to find the ideal candidate for the next president of Texas Tech University."
Over the past two decades Brashears, one of the nation's top food safety experts, has been the recipient of millions of dollars in federal, commodity and research grants. She has made breakthrough discoveries with her research and helped develop innovative new technologies in food safety.
University officials note that the advisory council serves as a larger representation of the university and includes representatives from several Texas Tech constituencies including faculty, administration, staff, students and community members. The council will also help with initial screenings and provide updates on the progress of the search to their respective constituency groups.
Candidate recommendations will be forwarded on to the chancellor. The final selection will be made by the chancellor, who will make the appointment with the prior approval of the Board of Regents. The group is chaired by Nancy Neal, member of the Board of Regents and a 1985 graduate of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. "We're seeking a large and diverse pool of applicants to ensure we find the best possible candidate for the next president," Neal said.
Earlier this year, university officials announced the selection of a 17-member search committee who will help identify potential candidates, assist with initial screenings of candidates and ensure that their respective constituency groups are kept up-to-date on the progress of the search. Candidate recommendations will be forwarded to the Chancellor. The final selection will be made by the chancellor, who will seek confirmation of his choice by the Board of Regents. Among the 11 voting-members of the committee are Michael Galyean, Horn Professor, Thornton Distinguished Chair, and Dean of Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, Texas Tech University.
