A graduate student from TexasTech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences won the graduate student research poster competition earlier this month (Dec. 2-4) in the Food and Environmental Safety section at the annual meeting of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases in Chicago.

"This is terrific news," said Leslie Thompson, chairman and professor in the department. The international scientific meeting draws some 400 participants from across the United States, as well as South America and Europe.

Master's student Josh Ison of Batavia, Ohio, presented the poster titled, "A Meta-analysis of the association of Lactobacillus acidophilus NP51 administration with Escherichia coli O157 in feces and on hides of feedlot cattle."

There were three awards given in the section, two for oral presentations and only one for all the poster presentations, so this is a tremendous achievement for Ison, said Texas Tech Food Safety and Public Health Professor Guy Loneragan. "This is the second year in a row that Texas Tech students have won graduate student awards in this section," he said.

The Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases was established in 1920 to discuss and disseminate research advances in animal diseases. At its annual meeting, international research scientists, graduate students, and industry and academic professionals present and discuss advances in the global livestock and companion animal industries.
