Texas Tech grad and noted Plainview ag producer Glenn Schur has been named the 'Texas Agriculture Lifetime Leadership Program Alumni of the Year' by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. The awards ceremony was held earlier this year in Austin.

Schur, who graduated with a degree in agricultural economics from Tech in 1980 farms 1,800 acres on the Texas High Plains, including cotton, grain sorghum, wheat and sunflowers. He also manages 100 registered Limousin cattle. Awards for Schur include Agricultural Award Winner for the Blue Legacy Award (2011), and Tech's CASNR Distinguished Alumni Award (2008).

The Texas A&M leadership program was established by Texas Cooperative Extension to create a cadre of leaders in Texas agriculture, said program coordinator Jim Mazurkiewicz. As part of the competitive program, participants must be 25 to 45 years of age, nominated by their peers, and go through an application and interview process.

The two-year program includes seminars with experts and on-site tours in the United States and other countries, Mazurkiewicz said. Participants meet with business and governmental leaders. Previous classes have included farmers, ranchers, communicators, chemists, business professionals and many other women and men from across the state.

Separately, Jim Prewitt was honored with the 'Tribute to Texas Lifetime Achievement Award' by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. The founder of Texas-based Landmark Nurseries, Prewitt is a member of Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Advisory Board.

The lifetime achievement award was established in 1999 to honor people who have given exceptional service to agriculture throughout their career. Landmark Nurseries is considered to be one of the largest, wholesale grower-distributors in Texas.

Prewitt serves on the Happy Hill Farm Board of Directors, State Fair of Texas Board, Texas Nursery & Landscape Association and the Texas Water Smart Steering Committee. He's a founding member and chair of the Floriculture Advisory Committee at Texas A&M, and a member of the American Nursery & Landscape Association, Ohio Florist Association and the Southern Nurseryman Association.
