Charles Klein named interim chair of Landscape Architecture Department
A long-time associate professor and noted landscape architect has been named the new interim chair of Texas Tech University's Department of Landscape Architecture, according to officials with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resource. Charles Klein will step into the new post on June 1.
"We look forward to Charles' leadership," said CASNR Dean Michael Galyean. "He's a nationally recognized leader in study abroad programs and is an active and respected professional landscape architect."
International study has long been an interest for Klein. For a decade he's led a community-based ecotourism summer study abroad trip to Yucatan, Mexico where students work with rural Maya communities to develop low-impact tourism projects.
The Maryland native teaches a wide range of classes, including landscape architecture professional practice, site design, site construction and development and proposal writing. His research focuses on service-learning and study abroad pedagogies. He is also a member of the prestigious Texas Tech Teaching Academy.
"I'm honored to be entrusted with the leadership of the department and look forward to the challenges we face," Klein said. "My vision will be a student centered with a focus on teaching and engagement."
Klein earned a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture from West Virginia University and a master's from Morgan State University. He earned a doctorate in agricultural communication and education from Texas Tech. In addition he's licensed in Maryland and Texas, a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and has more than 30 years of experience in public and private consulting.
Klein serves as faculty advisor to the university's Student American Society of Landscape Architects and Sigma Lambda Alpha, a scholastic honor society that recognizes academic achievement among students in the field of landscape architecture.
