The Dean of Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has been selected to receive this year's prestigious 'New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award.' Michael Galyean was presented the honor on Monday (July 8) at a joint annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association and American Society of Animal Science in Indianapolis.

The Federation of Animal Science Societies and American Feed Industry Association New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award is similar to a life-time achievement award. The purpose of the honor is to stimulate, acknowledge and reward pioneering and innovative research relevant to the nutrition of animals that benefits mankind and the nutritional value of foods from animals.

Program officials note that among the qualities the award recipient must exhibit is an outstanding and innovative contribution to nutrition research concerning animals that benefits mankind and/or the nutritional value of food from animals.

Galyean, who was named CASNR's dean last year, is a Horn professor and holds the position of Thornton Distinguished Chair in beef cattle nutrition and management in Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences. He received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from New Mexico State University, and a master's in animal science and doctoral degree in animal nutrition, both from Oklahoma State University. He joined the faculty at Texas Tech in 1998.

Awards and honors for Galyean include the American Society of Animal Science Morrison Award (2012); College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Outstanding Researcher Award (2005, 2004,); and the President's Academic Achievement Award (2005). Additionally, he earned the Animal Management Award from the American Society of Animal Science (2006); Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Service and Outreach Award (2007); and he was named a Fellow in the American Society of Animal Science (2010).

The previous three winners of the FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award include Terry Klopfenstein at the University of Nebraska; George Fahey, Jr. at University of Illinois; and Gary Hartnell at Monsanto.
