Step Up; Texas Alliance for Water Conservation holds field walk series
The Texas Alliance for Water Conservation (TAWC) knows water management is a timely and increasingly important matter to producers across the South Plains of Texas, especially during the summer growing season. In order to provide information about irrigation strategies and management technology, the TAWC is hosting a series of field walks looking at grain sorghum, corn and cotton.
These field walks take place at TAWC Site 21 on Eddie Teeter's farm located 2.4 miles south of Lockney on Highway 378. Each begins at 9:00am and there is no cost for these events. Field walks have been held on May 22, June 12 and July 10. The next is scheduled to take place on July 31, followed by walks on August 15 and September 11. The August 15 field walk will be held in conjunction with the annual TAWC Summer Field Day.
"We have had a good crowd and positive feedback from our previous field walks, and hope for the group to grow even more in number as we provide more valuable information throughout the remainder of the summer growing season," said Rick Kellison, project director for TAWC. "These field walks are a great opportunity for producers to hear from research experts and view in action the latest irrigation management technology."
Researcher and producer Dan Krieg and independent crop consultant Bob Glodt have discussed evapotranspiration, water budgets, fertilizer needs, soil probing, and other timely topics at past field walks and will continue to discuss similar subjects at future walks. Irrigation technology companies have also been on hand to demonstrate their latest equipment and answer any questions producers have.
The Texas Alliance for Water Conservation is a partnership of Floyd and Hale county producers, data collection technologies, and collaborating partners that include: individual industries, universities, and government agencies. The TAWC project was made possible through a grant from the Texas Water Development Board.
