Integrated Scholar: Provost spotlights landscape architecture's DeMera Ollinger
Texas Tech University's Provost Office reported today on the progress of the Department of Landscape Architecture's DeMera Ollinger and her academic path as an Integrated Scholar. Specifically, officials note that along with a commitment to academics, the Dumas native is pursuing, "a course of lifelong study through their involvement in active learning experiences."
Ollinger's creative design capabilities and interest in environmental sustainability drew her to the field of landscape architecture. The curriculum constantly tests her thinking; however, Ollinger said she enjoys challenging both sides of her brain when it comes to the field she loves.
Outside the classroom, Ollinger is president of the Student American Society of Landscape Architects and has served as a member of Agri-Techsans, promoting the departments within Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at events both on and off campus.
Though active on campus, Ollinger noted that her most rewarding service opportunity was beyond her South Plains' campus. While studying abroad in Brazil, she volunteered to teach English to underprivileged children, some of whom had never attended school. On her way to completing the fourth year of a five-year bachelor's program, she said environmental sustainability remains at the core of her outreach efforts and keeps her optimistic about the future.
Ollinger started her college career at West Texas A&M University digging into English literature. But it wasn't until she started working at an Amarillo greenhouse that an opportunity to combine her creative passion with a newfound interest in plants took root. That change in vocation direction led her to the Hub City and a new major in Texas Tech's Department of Landscape Architecture.
