AFS graduate student Hergenreder honored for standout research poster
A graduate student within Texas Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences earned third place honors for her research poster at the 'Innovate, Innovations in Animal Growth and Health: The Next Generation of Cell Biology Conference.' Jerilyn Hergenreder was presented the honor in Braselton, Georgia, last week (Sept. 22-24).
Her poster was titled, "Effects of supplemental lysine and methionine in combination with zilpaterol hydrochloride on muscle fiber type, size and beta-adrenergic receptors in finishing feedlot cattle." The competition had 14 entries and was open to both graduate students and faculty.
Hergenreder is currently completing an advanced degree under the guidance of Brad Johnson, a professor in Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences and the Gordon W. Davis Regent's Chair in Meat Science and Muscle Biology. "Jerilyn is an excellent Ph.D. student," Johnson said. "She has an innate ability to do basic research and explain it in a very understandable way to a diverse audience."
The conference was organized by the American Society for Nutrition and the American Society of Animal Science. According to conference organizers, the program concentrated on the most recent scientific advances in growth and development with an emphasis in potential applications.
