National Honor; AEC's Meyers wins NARRU Young Educator Award
A commitment to teaching has landed Courtney Meyers, an assistant professor of agricultural communications within Texas Tech's Department of Agricultural Education and Communications, the Non-Land-Grant Agricultural and Renewable Resources Universities' (NARRU) Young Educator Award, university officials announced today (Sep. 17).
"Dr. Meyers is very deserving of this award," said department chairman Steven Fraze. "The fact that she received this award just validates what we know about her being an outstanding faculty member."
Since joining the Texas Tech faculty in 2008, Meyers has led 655 students in both undergraduate and graduate courses. Her areas of teaching expertise include web design, public relations and social media. She also serves as an adviser for Texas Tech's Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow student organization.
Meyers said she gained inspiration for her teaching philosophy from family members and excellent teachers. "My dad was always a great teacher, and he said 'you just have to really care about your students,' and I do," she said. "I think excellent teachers are those that recognize what works and what doesn't work, and actively seek ways to better their students' experience."
Meyers received her bachelor's degree in agricultural communication and journalism from Kansas State University. Her master's degree in agricultural and extension education is from the University of Arkansas, and her doctorate in agricultural education and communication from the University of Florida.
Awards and honors for Meyers include the CASNR Student Ag Council's Faculty Member of the Semester Award (2010); Texas Tech's Alumni Association's New Faculty Award (2011); Association for Communication Excellence's Academic Programs Award of Excellence (2013) CASNR Junior Faculty Member Award (2013), Texas Tech's Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development Center's Spotlight Award (2013); and the President's Award of Excellence in Teaching (2013).
According to program officials, the purpose NARRU is to be a unifying force for all faculty, students, staff, and administrators of agriculture, food, and renewable resource programs at NARRU state funded, public colleges and universities. NARRU promotes excellence in science-based teaching with hands-on experience in conducting responsive and issue-based research, and in communicating findings to stakeholders and the general public.
