AAEC's Mackenzie White takes the reins as Texas Tech's new Masked Rider
Mackenzie White, a junior agricultural and applied economics major, is Texas Tech University's new Masked Rider. She becomes the 53rd student to don the iconic mascot's mask and cape so often seen at university athletic events.
"The Masked Rider is the single-most recognized representative of Texas Tech," White said. "Ideally, my Masked Rider legacy will be one of a hard-working horsewoman who was consistently dedicated not only to the position and its duties, but also to Texas Tech University and all that it stands for "" honor, integrity, boldness and accomplishment."
A graduate of Marble Falls High School, White already is a member of the Masked Rider family. She volunteered on the field safety team two years ago and worked as a Masked Rider assistant during the past year. She's also is a member of the Texas Tech Equestrian Team, on which she competes in the advanced division against other collegiate equestrians through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.
Wearing black riding clothes, mask, bolero hat, scarlet cape, and perched atop Fearless Champion, a black quarter horse, the Masked Rider is among the most colorful symbols of school spirit in the nation. The Masked Rider tradition dates to the 1936 season when George Tate, wearing a cape made by Tech's home economics department, led the team onto the field aboard a horse borrowed from the Tech barn.
During an average year the Masked Rider travels more than 20,000 miles making appearances at athletic events, rodeos and other functions. This individual also appears at men's and women's basketball games and several Texas Tech baseball games. After graduation in May 2015, White said she plans to go to law school and pursue a career in agricultural law.
