Among the CASNR recipients were:

• Melissa Pena, a pre-veterinary major from Mission
• Tate Leatherwood, an animal science major from Florence
• Hayley Brownlow, an agricultural and applied economics major from Sweetwater
• Kirsten Shaw, an animal science major from Mason

This year Tech had a total of 51 students receiving Terry Scholarships, making it the fastest-growing school in the foundation's 25-year history, Tech administration officials said. "Texas Tech's incredible growth in the number of Terry Scholars in the past two years shows not only the type of high-caliber students the university attracts, but also reflects well on the type of education these students are seeking from Texas Tech," said Michael San Francisco, dean of Tech's Honors College.

Meantime, this year's class will be awarded a projected $1.7 million, he added. The university received more than 600 applicants for the scholarships. With the addition of the new class, a total of 141 Terry Scholars will now attend Tech with approximately $3.8 million in total funds. The Terry Scholar Program began at Tech in 2011.

The Terry Foundation was established in 1986 by Houstonians Howard and Nancy Terry out of a desire to help young people help themselves, according to program officials. One of the foundation's goal is to strengthen the state of Texas by identifying, developing and supporting Texas high school graduates with high leadership potential. Program leaders note that the actual amount of the scholarship award varies for each scholar depending on other scholarships and the ability of the scholar's family to contribute to the cost of college.
