TAWC brings home National Water & Energy Conservation Award
The Texas Alliance for Water Conservation in the Texas Tech University Department of Plant and Soil Science has been selected for a National Water & Energy Conservation Award from the Fairfax, Virginia-based Irrigation Association. The honor was presented during a special ceremony on Thursday (Dec. 8) in Las Vegas.
Established in 1982, the National Water & Energy Conservation Award honors a company, organization or other group entity that has made significant achievements in the conservation of water and energy due to irrigation procedures, practices, equipment, methods and techniques. Potential nominees include water providers; cities/townships; end users; consulting firms; universities; and research facilities.
"The TAWC is honored to receive this prestigious national award," said TAWC Project Director Rick Kellison. "We've worked hard for many years with some of the best producers, researchers and industry leaders to improve agricultural water management and appreciate that our efforts are being recognized."
Program officials note that the TAWC project is a partnership of area producers, data collection technologies, and collaborating partners that includes industries, universities, and government agencies. The project uses on-farm demonstrations of cropping and livestock systems to compare the production practices, technologies, and systems that can maintain individual farm profitability while improving water use efficiency with a goal of extending the life of the Ogallala Aquifer while maintaining the viability of local farms and communities.
All production-related decisions are made by the more than 20 producers involved in the project. The project field sites involve more than 6,000 acres in Castro, Crosby, Deaf Smith, Floyd, Hale, Lamb, Lubbock, Parmer and Swisher counties. These sites represent the range of agricultural practices including monoculture cropping systems; crop rotations; no-till, limited-till and conventional tillage practices; land application of manure; and fully integrated crop and livestock systems.
Program officials note that the Irrigation Association is a leading membership organization for irrigation companies and professionals. It is committed to promoting efficient irrigation and to long-term sustainability of water resources for future generations, and works to improve industry proficiency, advocate sound water management and grow demand for water-efficient products and services.
