Texas Tech hosts 'Home for the Holidays' pet adoption event

The Texas Tech University Livestock Arena will be full of adoptable dogs on Saturday looking for a home for the holidays.
Texas Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences will host the "Home for the Holidays" Adoptathon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday (Dec.9). The event is being coordinated by Alexandra Protopopova, assistant professor in companion animal science, and Kelsea Brown, graduate student in companion animal science.
Brown said the event will feature dogs from several different rescue organizations ready for adoption. There will also be a photographer at the event to take free, festive holiday photos of owners and their pets, so those planning to attend the event are encouraged to bring their own dogs as well.
Protopopova said this is a great opportunity to find a pet as a Christmas present, especially for a child looking for a lifelong companion.
"Just make sure the recipient actually wants a pet," Protopopova said. "Otherwise, it contributes to the overpopulation and abandonment of animals that is so prevalent in the Lubbock area."
Brown and Protopopova both encourage anyone considering adding a new pet into their family to come to the event and consider adoption. The event is free to the public and all are welcome. Several local animal shelters and rescue organizations will be showcasing their dogs and the Lubbock Animal Shelter will be providing microchips for $10 cash.
"When people have an opportunity to adopt from a shelter or a rescue, we encourage them to do it. It's really a benefit for the entire community," Brown said.
The Livestock Arena is located directly west of the Animal and Food Sciences building, at the corner of Indiana Avenue and Main Street, near the United Supermarkets Arena.
