More than 1,400 Texas Tech students, including 54 from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, received diplomas at the university's commencement ceremonies on Saturday (Aug. 11) at United Supermarkets Arena (1701 Indiana Ave.) in Lubbock.
"Commencement is an opportunity to acknowledge our students' achievements and thank them for their past and future representation of Texas Tech University," said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. "We look forward to their continued contributions to our society as they move forward in their many endeavors."
During the event outstanding students carried banners representing their respective colleges. Weston Allen, a senior agricultural and applied economics major from Lubbock, represented CASNR. Administrators selected the banner bearers based on all-around achievement. Allen was also the highest-ranking summer graduate from CASNR.
Graduation recipients from the individual departments and majors included:
• Agribusiness, 3
• Agricultural & Applied Economics, 11
• Agricultural Communications, 2
• Animal Science, 9
• Conservation Law Enforcement, 2
• Interdisciplinary Agriculture, 6
• Landscape Architecture, 4
• Natural Resources Management, 13
• Plant and Soil Science, 4
U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX 21st District) served as the summer commencement speaker for CASNR's Saturday morning ceremony. He serves as Chairman of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, which has jurisdiction over NASA, the Department of Energy including its 17 national laboratories, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Smith, a San Antonio native, received his undergraduate degree from Yale and attended law school at Southern Methodist University. He was elected to Congress in 1987 and represents a district that spans Austin, San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. The veteran lawmaker announced his retirement earlier this year.
