CASNR faculty, staff recognized for service years at Texas Tech ceremony
By: Norman Martin
Texas Tech University recognized 42 outstanding College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources faculty and staff members today (Apr. 11) with recognition of their length of service to the university community. The awards ceremony was held in the university's Red Raider Ballroom in Tech's Student Union Building.
One particular recipient –Mary Lou Flom – stood out among the CASNR crowd for her four and half decades of service to the Texas Tech community. Flom began working for Tech in 1972, and joined the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications staff six years later as an administrative business assistant.
"I was a graduate student when Mary Lou came to the department," said Steve Fraze, chairman of Tech's Department of Agricultural Education and Communications. "She's been a part of my life as both student and faculty in her role for 40 years. To this day when I meet up with alumni across the state and nation, they have one question in common; "How is Mary Lou doing?" Then they ask about Texas Tech. Mary Lou is agricultural education at Texas Tech to numerous people."
In 2013, an endowed scholarship to honor Flom was established in her name, Fraze said. The scholarships go to undergraduate students in the department. The 'Mary Lou Flom Endowed Scholarship' was created by former students to show their appreciation for all the hard work and dedication Flom has invested in the department over the decades.
