Friends, family and Texas Tech faculty members and staff honored and recognized the kindness and good works of Mary Lou Flom during a special ceremony this afternoon (July 25) at the university's McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. The veteran administrative business assistant, who spent the vast majority of her career (1978-2019) with Tech's Department of Agricultural Education and Communications, is retiring at the end of the month. Among those presenting tributes were College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources Dean William Brown and Steven Fraze, chair of Tech's Department of Agricultural Education and Communications, along with Flom's son, C.J. Nava, and Associate Professors Erica Irlbeck and Courtney Meyers.
In addition, the crowd that filled the banquet room were treated to a highlight video of Flom's career, a special Texas Tech chocolate thank you cake-cutting, and an opportunity to sign a memorial table top book for Flom. The program ended with a brief speech from Flom, along with presentation of several retirement gifts. In 2013, an endowed scholarship to honor Flom was established in her name. The 'Mary Lou Flom Endowed Scholarship' was created by former students to show their appreciation for all the hard work and dedication Flom has invested in the department. The scholarships go to undergraduate students in the department.
