Steady undergraduate growth lifts CASNR to another record enrollment
By: Norman Martin
This fall Texas Tech University welcomed a record number of students. Officials reported
a new enrollment record of 38,742 students, the 11th straight year of record enrollment.
Meanwhile, Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources continued its decade-long enrollment growth trend with 2,572 students signing up for classes, according to the official 20th class day numbers. That includes 2,174 undergraduates and 398 graduate students; an increase of 75 students over last year's CASNR numbers.
"The positive job market, coupled with continued increase in people moving to Texas, resulting in the growth of graduating high-school students signals an environment for continued growth in CASNR students into the future," said CASNR Dean William Brown.
Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences once again led the jump in student numbers, moving from 908 to 947 students, an increase of 39 students.
"Our enrollment was up 46 undergraduate students, mostly in various animal science programs as opposed to food science or graduate student numbers," said Michael Orth, chairman of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences "Over the last 11 years we have been averaging about 14 percent growth per year."
"We anticipate continued growth over the next five years with the addition of the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine since animal science is the primary major for pre-veterinary students," Orth added.
CASNR's positive numbers are a direct result of the momentum of faculty, staff and members of the Dr. Bill Bennett Student Success Center who are creating new opportunities for students, said Cindy Akers, CASNR's Associate Dean for Academic and Student Programs.
