NRM’s Matthew Barnes named Texas Academy of Science Fellow
By: Norman Martin
Matthew Barnes, an associate professor within Texas Tech University's Department of Natural Resources Management, has been selected as a Texas Academy of Science (TAS) Fellow. Texas' oldest scientific society, TAS has been dedicated to promoting science excellence in the state of Texas since it was founded in 1880.
Barnes' honor will be recognized at the organization's annual meeting on Saturday (Mar. 2) in Odessa, Texas. “Designation as a fellow comes with recognition of your service to the academy, and of your significant contributions to science and the scientific community within Texas in both the field of scholarship as well as teaching,” said TAS Treasurer Kathleen Wood in her notification letter.
“It is always an honor to be recognized by your peers,” Barnes said. “I'm particularly humbled to be recognized by TAS, whose members come from across the huge state of Texas and represent diverse scientific fields ranging from anthropology to STEM education and every scientific field in between.”
The Plano native's research program focuses on the ecology of environmental DNA (eDNA) and eDNA applications to improve fundamental ecological understanding about the distribution and dispersal of species, primarily in freshwater ecosystems.
Barnes' long term research experiences have also included predicting species occurrence with species distribution models and geographic information systems (GIS) and investigating invasive species impacts through field observations and laboratory experiments. In addition, Barnes has participated in a Hispanic-Serving Institution Education Grants Program looking into supporting the university's TrUE Scholars Program, for which Barnes serves as a TrUE Faculty Fellow.
Barnes recently completed his term as TAS president. In addition to his Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources teaching duties, Barnes is a member of the Texas Tech Teaching Academy (2022). Founded in 1997, the 190+ member academy was established to recognize excellence in teaching and to promote the university's teaching mission.
Prior to joining the Tech faculty in 2014, Barnes worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Environmental Change Initiative at the University of Notre Dame. Barnes received his bachelor's degree in biology from Southwestern University. His doctorate is from the University of Notre Dame.
