Davis College Ag Ambassadors participate in Nation Ag Day recognition
By: Norman Martin
As part of National Agriculture Day activities, Texas Techs Ambassadors for Agriculture members will be organizing an event to celebrate and promote agriculture to all of Texas Techs campus along Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources Ag Row buildings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Mar. 19).
Davis Colleges Ambassadors for Agriculture is a group of young men and women who are dedicated to spreading the story of American agriculture and opportunities for youth in the broad fields of agriculture and natural resources. Coordinated nationally by the Agriculture Council of America (ACS), National Agriculture Day brings together students from across the nation under the theme of Agriculture: Growing a Climate for Tomorrow.
“My hope through this event is that Texas Techs campus will learn more about the diversity and importance of agriculture and natural resources,” said Davis Colleges Program Manager for Student Retention Maeley Herring. “I am excited to see all of our Davis College students come together with a mission of promoting Davis College and their connection to ag and natural resources.”
Many of Davis Colleges student organizations across different departments will be represented, sharing their part in agriculture and natural resources with our campus community, Herring said. Landscape architecture students will also be giving tours of the Agricultural Pavilion where the landscape architecture studio courses are held, sharing the rich history of the building and educating on what landscape architecture is and its importance to agriculture.
Students are interested in advocating on behalf of agriculture and their future roles in the industry, added ACA President Jenny Pickett. “Their participation in National Ag Day activities provides a glimpse of the future of agriculture," she said.
According to USDA Economic Research Service, more than 22 million full- and part-time jobs were related to the agricultural and food sector, or roughly 10 percent of all U.S. employment. On-farm jobs represented about 2.6 million jobs, or a little over one percent of U.S. employment.
