Texas ASLA Design Competition Spotlights Davis College Students

Texas Tech's Department of Landscape Architecture students recently took home three awards in the categories of general design and residential design from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects' 2024 Design Competition. The honors were presented last month at the Texas ASLA Annual Conference in Austin.
The projects showed work across topics such as early childhood nature play and residential design, said Kathryn Nelson, Senior Lecturer and Assistant Department Chair within the Department of Landscape Architecture. The projects were created during participation in the senior and graduate-level Design Studios.
'Patriot Plains Plaza' (Award: Honor) Colleen Dawson, a senior from Paris; Kevin Goertzen, a senior from Lubbock; Ivana Gonzalez, a senior from Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico; Kyle Seaback, a senior from Georgetown; and Truett Schafer, a senior from Deming, New Mexico
'Re-imagining Early Childhood: Nature Play and Learning for Children Below 3' (Award: Merit) Moyin Sabainah Akinbobola, a graduate student from lgbo-oja of Ondo State and Lagos State, Nigeria; Danielle Craig, a graduate student from Lubbock; Garrett Farrow, a graduate student from Lubbock; Umme Tasnima Haque, a graduate student from Chittagong, Bangladesh; MD Zahid Hasan, a graduate student from Dhaka, Bangladesh; and Fariha Tasnim, a graduate student from Dhaka Bangladesh
'Site Scale Design in the Heart of Lubbock' (Award: Merit) Kyle Seaback, a senior from Georgetown, and Truett Schafer, a senior from Deming, New Mexico
In other action during this time, more than 35 students from the Department of Landscape Architecture took the opportunity to participate in an extended field trip to multiple landscape architecture firms and site visits in the Austin area. Andrew Castilleja, an instructor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and a doctoral student in Land-Use Planning, Management & Design, led the off-campus program.
