Marup Hossain Joins Dept. of Agricultural & Applied Economics, CURES

Marup Hossain, an agricultural and development economist with extensive global on-the-ground experience, has been named an Assistant Professor in Rural Sustainability & Economic Development within Texas Tech’s Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics and the university’s Center for Coupled Urban/Rural Environmental Sustainability, according to officials within the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. He officially stepped into his new teaching and research post on Jan. 1.

“I am excited to bring my international experiences into the classroom and investigate rural development issues on regional, national, and global scales,” Hossain said. “We aim to engage in outreach and collaborative activities to deliver evidence-based policies to local stakeholders, helping them navigate various climatic and non-climatic challenges in their economic decision-making.”

Hossain specializes in agricultural and rural development issues, with primary focuses on technology adoption, agricultural value chain development, and climate adaptation and mitigation.

Prior to joining the Texas Tech faculty, Hossain served as an Economist with the International Fund for Agricultural Development in Rome, along with being a non-resident fellow with Monash University in Australia. Earlier he worked at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), World Bank, United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and BRAC.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh. His doctorate in applied economics is from the University of Florida.

Texas Tech’s Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics currently has approximately 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, along with 475 undergraduate students, and 66 graduate students. The department offers bachelor’s degrees in agribusiness and agricultural and applied economics, as well as a concentration in international agribusiness with programs in Latin America, Asia, and Europe. It also offers master’s and doctorate degrees in agricultural and applied economics, and a master’s of agribusiness.
