Abhipsita Das Joins Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics

Abhipsita Das has been named an Assistant Professor of Practice within Texas Tech’s Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics, according to officials within the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. She officially stepped into her new post on Jan. 1.

“In this position, I primarily serve as the coordinator of the Master of Agribusiness Program (MAB). I am eager to leverage my experience in teaching and research to contribute to the program’s growth,” said Das.

“My goal is to explore the bridges between academia and the agribusiness industry. I strive to ensure that the students are capable of applying their knowledge in real-world scenarios, gaining valuable hands-on experience.”

Her research and teaching specialization is consumer economics, agricultural policy and food security, and her research program primarily focuses on consumer economics with an intersection of food policy and nutrition.

Prior to joining the Texas Tech faculty, Das served as an Assistant Professor of Economics within Alabama State University’s Department of Finance & Accounting. Earlier, she worked as a postdoctoral scholar and lecturer within Texas State University’s Department of Agricultural Science. In addition, Das served as a postdoctoral research scholar within Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Agribusiness.

She received her bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Xavier's College-University of Calcutta (India). Her master’s degree in economics is from the Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics in Pune, India. Her doctorate in applied economics is from Auburn University.

Honors include the Alabama State University Faculty Research Award (2024). She has also secured a USAID grant from Feed the Future Food Systems for Nutrition Innovation Lab as a Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI). She is a member of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, Southern Agricultural Economics Association, Southern Economic Association and the North American Association of Fisheries Economics.

Tech’s Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics currently has approximately 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, along with 475 undergraduate students, and 66 graduate students. The department offers bachelor’s degrees in agribusiness and agricultural and applied economics, as well as a concentration in international agribusiness with programs in Latin America, Asia, and Europe. It also offers master’s and doctorate degrees in agricultural and applied economics, and a master’s in agribusiness.
