The internationally recognized animal science researcher within the Department of Animal & Food Sciences will be presented with the honor at a special awards ceremony on Tuesday (Jul. 8) at the National ASAS-CSAS Annual Meeting in Hollywood, Florida.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by my peers within the American Society of Animal Science.  I have been a member of this society since being an undergraduate student at South Dakota State in 1990,” Johnson said. “In addition, many of my key research findings over the years have been published in the ASAS flagship journal, Journal of Animal Science.”

Chance Brooks, the Chair of Davis College’s Department of Animal & Food Sciences, noted, “Dr. Johnson’s selection for the 2025 Animal Growth & Development Award is a testament to the remarkable impact of his research and mentorship in the field of animal science. His contributions to advancing our understanding of muscle growth and development in market animals have earned him national and international recognition, and we are proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor alongside him.”

A native of Milbank, South Dakota, Johnson’s research has involved evaluating the mechanism of action and physiology of two classes of veterinary drugs approved for meat production, steroidal implants and beta-adrenergic agonists. More recently, he has been studying the proposed metabolism of compounds related to potential residues in edible tissues. Specifically, he has played a pivotal role in meat consumption anti-doping cases.

Johnson is serving a five-year term on the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. In addition, he has published 159 peer-reviewed journal articles, 12 invited reviews or book chapters, and advised more than 70 graduates and postdoctoral students.

Prior to joining the Texas Tech faculty in 2008, he was a muscle growth and development and meat quality assistant and associate professor with Kansas State’s Department of Animal Sciences & Industry. He also worked as an Extension Ruminant Nutrition & Beef Feedlot Specialist and assistant professor with South Dakota State’s Department of Animal & Range Sciences.

He received his bachelor’s degree in animal science from South Dakota State University. His master’s degree and doctorate in animal science are from the University of Minnesota.
