“Branding Excellence” is a series highlighting students and faculty who perform at a high level of professionalism, are forward-thinking individuals, and always have the willingness to learn more. The series name is derived from the saying “Pursuing Excellence” which means setting ambitious goals and working tirelessly to achieve them, consistently performing at your best, bettering yourself and those around you, and staying resilient in the face of challenges. The Department of Animal & Food Sciences is dedicated to excellence in every aspect of its faculty, staff and students. The department wants to wear the “brand” of success as they address todays challenges and create a better future for our world.”
Excellence – a word often used by students, faculty and staff within the Department of Animal & Food Sciences. Some view it as just a word, while others incorporate it in their way of life.
Although she never imagined herself back in the classroom after retirement, a conversation with a good friend changed everything.
“I thought I was done,” Wendy Scott said with a laugh.
Scott, an academic advisor and instructor in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences, said she was actively involved with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, 4-H, and also taught high school and middle school for 11 years before accepting a job at Texas Tech University in 2023.
After a 31-year career in teaching, Scott said she thought she was done with the education scene. That was until coworker and friend, Kayla Rathmann, convinced Scott to apply for the job.
“When Kayla tells you to do something, you just do it,” Scott said.
Receiving a bachelors degree in home economics from Tarleton State University and a masters degree in animal science from Sul Ross State University, Scotts roots run deep with the Department of Animal & Food Sciences. She said her previous job with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension allowed her to form connections within the department.
“The relationships were already there,” she said. “I knew the people, I knew the culture, and I knew what kind of excellence this department expected.”.
Scott said she enjoys spending her time supporting students one-on-one and helping them map their futures.
“I love when that light comes on,” she said. “When students realize maybe one path isnt working, but theres another one that could be perfect for them—thats the best part of my job.”
Alongside her fellow advisors, Scott said she also enjoys sharing ideas and joys that come along with the job. As far as variety – no day is like the rest.
“Every day is different,” she said. “Thats how I operate, and I like challenges like that. We [advisors] have to change every day, because if were the same, were going backwards,” she said.
As a part-time advisor, Scott said she fills the rest of her time as a real estate agent at Exit Realty.
“I have a great friendship and business partner that I can lean on,” she said, “Im surrounded by some great people.”
Scott was recently recognized as one of Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources outstanding staff for spring semester. She said her recognition gave her the opportunity to reflect on her time as an advisor.
“It made me realize again how important my team is to me,” she said. “Im beyond blessed to be a part of this.”
What does Branding Excellence mean to you?: “Being the best I can be, not for myself, but to benefit my students and my co-workers.”
