For generations, agriculture has shaped the culture of the South Plains, a legacy Texas Techs Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources will honor next month with its annual Ag Week.
From Sept. 2 to 6, the college will host a series of events aimed at welcoming students, spotlighting agricultural traditions and exploring the evolving role of food, fiber and natural resources in West Texas. Venues across campus and the Lubbock area campus will play host to music, service projects, giveaways and a tailgate before the Red Raiders take on Kent State.
“Ag Week allows everyone associated with the college, including our students, to celebrate the importance of agriculture and natural resources,” said Robert Cox, Davis Colleges Associate Dean for Academic & Student Programs. “For our students, especially, it provides an opportunity to meet other students and show what an integral part of the TTU campus we are.”
According to Davis Colleges Program Manager for Scholarships Madi Nall, the week begins on Tuesday with Ag Fest, an early evening gathering at the Department of Animal & Food Sciences Livestock Arena.
Set for 5:30 p.m., the event will feature live music from Cross Creek Junction - a country-and-western band made up of Davis College students – along with hamburgers and sausage wraps. Dozens of student organizations will be on hand, offering new and returning students a closer look at the colleges extracurricular and academic programs.
Wednesdays focus shifts to an Ag Week Service Day, where students, faculty and staff will volunteer in projects benefiting the community. “Theres a way for everyone to get involved,” said Erica Irlbeck, the colleges Associate Dean For Outreach & Engagement.
Service opportunities range from the South Plains Food Bank to Ramirez Elementary School, and from the Ronald McDonald House to the FiberMax Museum of Discovery. (For a full listing, please visit here)
On Thursday, students can pick up commemorative Ag Game T-shirts at the Texas Tech Dairy Barn Courtyard, followed Friday by Celebrate Dairy Day, complete with free ice cream, along with milk and donuts (while supplies last). That evening, the college will host a Competitive Teams Reunion at the Livestock Arena.
The week concludes Saturday with a Davis College Tailgate on the Texas Tech Engineering Key before the Red Raiders 11 a.m. kickoff at Jones AT&T Stadium.
