Texas Techs Department of Landscape Architecture announced the appointment of S Y Andalib, an internationally recognized expert in advanced landscape architecture design software, as Assistant Professor. He officially assumed his teaching and research responsibilities starting Sept. 1.
Andalibs research focuses on pioneering interactive eXtended Reality (XR) learning modules for landscape architecture construction using Game Engines while incorporating geospatial AR and VR techniques, 3D scanning, and virtual space creation. Through this research, he aims to enhance the benefits of hands-on learning in the classroom and, conversely, make outdoor learning more meaningful by digitally overlaying site information onto the real world.
In the future, Andalib aims to fine-tune artificial intelligence (AI) workflows that will enhance the learning process through adaptive developmental pipelines. Additionally, he wants to introduce advanced image recognition in landscape architecture academia and practice for more efficient design and better natural preservation.
Andalibs recent teaching portfolio includes graduate and undergraduate courses in 3D modeling and rendering, utilizing cutting-edge software such as Rhino 3D, SketchUp, Twinmotion, and Lumion. Additionally, he has introduced students to XR technology awareness, employing Rhino 3D, Twinmotion, and Oculus Quest platforms.
Before joining Texas Techs faculty, Andalib contributed as a graduate research assistant within the universitys Department of Landscape Architecture and worked as a research associate at BRAC University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. His professional background also includes roles as Senior Executive Architect at Rangs Properties and Associate Architect at Form.3 Architects, both in Dhaka.
Outside the classroom, Andalib is a founding partner and Chief Technology Officer of Onushongo Bangladesh, a pioneering community participatory design development firm focused on sustainable low-income habitat projects.
An alumnus of Texas Tech, Andalib earned his doctorate in land-use planning, management and design, as well as a masters degree in landscape architecture. He holds a bachelors degree in architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology.
Texas Techs Department of Landscape Architecture is one of seven departments housed within Davis College. Accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the department offers Bachelor (BLA) and Master (MLA) degrees in landscape architecture.
Comprising approximately eight faculty members, the departments facilities span two campus buildings, including the Davis College Annex, which contains offices and classrooms, and a newly renovated historic Livestock Pavilion. For Fall 2024, the department reported enrollment of 99 BLA and 10 MLA students.
