New Horizons Need New Facilities

At Davis College, we are building momentum. With over 3,500 students and a 3.5% annual enrollment growth since 2014, our community is thriving. Research funding has surged from $8 million to $19 million in the same timeframe, positioning us as a global leader in agricultural innovation. But maintaining this trajectory—and securing our future—requires more than growth. It demands investment in state-of-the-art facilities that empower our students, faculty, and staff to lead with excellence.

This is why we are embarking on a bold initiative: creating a Hub for Excellence for Davis College. This transformational new facility will be the heart of our living laboratory of agriculture, landscapes, and natural resources, where students and faculty collaborate on solutions to the grand challenges facing our world.

The vision for these initiatives is coming to life with the help of donors, architect firms and the team at Davis College. The team’s vision for the new Davis College building is ambitious, with a goal to make the space inviting for students, faculty, staff, donors and alumni.

“As you come in off Flint Avenue, coming up 15th Street toward campus from the West, [Davis College] will be the first building you see,” Krehbiel said. “First and foremost, we want that building to be inviting, and we want our alumni, donors, and students, whether they’re a graduate of Davis College or not, to be wowed when they see our building.”

According to Krehbiel, the goal for the building is to celebrate West Texas agriculture and create a welcoming space for all who enter. The building will include a Raider Red Meats retail store, a Davis College merchandise store and an ice cream shop, all providing a welcoming space for students with classrooms and an entirely reimagined Student Success Center that includes an outdoor greenspace complete with plants native to West Texas.

“Each space will provide teaching and learning opportunities for our students and faculty, further driving our mission,” Krehbiel said.

Upon hearing more about the vision for Davis College and the commitment to showcasing West Texas agriculture, many donors were inspired to support the campaign.

“When [these donors] found out about [the building], they were very excited,” Williams said. “They came to me and said, ‘We want to be the first ones to give. We want to make that commitment now because we know that it could help bring in other financial gifts to this project.’”

The donors in question? Barry and SuDeline Street. The Streets are Texas Tech University alumni and stepped forward to be the first donors for the new Davis College building, giving $1 million.

“We love Texas Tech and we’re all about agriculture,” Street said. “That’s why we give. We want our grandkids to come here. We want there to be an ag college here. We want it to be the best choice, not to be because we went here, but because it is the best choice. So that’s why we give it, because we’re thinking of our grandkids.”

For donors like the Streets, their contributions are rooted in a deep belief in the future of Davis College. Their hope aligns closely with the college’s vision to create a space that inspires excellence, fosters connection, and serves as a true home for students, faculty and the agricultural community for generations to come.

Ways to give

The Future of Agriculture Starts at Davis College

“We’ve been talking about elevating campus, and we’ve been clear with the architecture firm, but the goal for this place is to be a home for our students,” Hudson said. “It’s really about building a culture around this idea that excellence is more than just the facility, but it’s what the facility does and what the facility means. Ultimately, it’s a home.”

Creating a home-like feeling within the building goes beyond the physical space. It is about cultivating connections and bringing students together in meaningful ways.

“One of the dean’s big visions has always been creating culture in these buildings,” Hudson said. “We want this building to be the place where you all go meet up and have lunch or host a study group, class, or club meeting.”

As the vision for the new Davis College building began to take shape, Texas Tech and Davis College partnered with HDR, an architecture firm based in Dallas, to help bring that vision to life. From the start, the HDR team felt the enthusiasm and purpose driving the project, working closely with the college to bring that energy to life through each design element.

“The passion everyone at Texas Tech has for their classes, their programs and the potential of this building was immediately evident,” said Kimberly Little, project manager principal at HDR. “We recognized what a unique opportunity it is to design a brand-new space that can become a true hub for Davis College, and that enthusiasm really inspired us. It makes us genuinely excited to help bring that vision to life.”

The HDR team anticipates construction for the new building to begin in November of 2026, with hopes that the project will be completed in early 2029.
