Linking Animals and People: Therapy, Companionship, and Competition

The Texas Tech Equestrian Center is a cornerstone of excellence for Davis College and the broader community, serving as the home for our Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team, Rodeo Team, Equestrian Team, and Horse Judging Team practices. This premier facility also hosts numerous competitive events throughout the year and provides essential stall space for students who bring their horses to campus. Beyond competition, the center is a beacon of wellness and community engagement, housing the Texas Tech Therapeutic Riding Center, which provides transformative services to individuals of all ages.

As the demand for equestrian events, training, and community programs continues to grow, the current facility is in need of significant upgrades to sustain its vital role in our region. To address these needs, we are embarking on a transformative project to scale the Equestrian Center into a world-class facility.

Elevate Equestrian Center

The Texas Tech Equestrian Center is a 100-acre teaching, researching, and outreach facility, home to the Ranch Horse, Rodeo, Equestrian, and Horse Judging Teams, as well as the Tech Therapeutic Riding Center. With many national champions housed at the facility, the equestrian center is looking to support its competitive excellence with needed updates.

“Elevating campus allows us to create a better environment for our students to excel,” John Pipkin, Ph.D., former executive director of the Texas Tech Equestrian Center.

The 20-year-old facility is used year-round, so periodic updates and routine maintenance on the facility are common. But, after many years, the facility is ready for a refresh.

“There’s also some expansion of facilities that would include some covers over arenas that would allow the teams to be able to operate regardless of what the weather is like,” Pipkin said. “We want to provide support for all of our teams and the students on those teams to be able to house their horses properly and to be able to practice in a space that allows them to get ready and to compete successfully.”

The commitment to student excellence drives every decision made at the equestrian center. While updating facilities, this will also open doors for more opportunities.

“It’s always about the students,” Pipkin said. “Anything that we can do here in our efforts is always going to be about elevating the students and being able to be in pursuit of excellence toward their lifelong goals and their dreams.”

A Vision for Enhancement

The enhanced Equestrian Center will provide state-of-the-art facilities to support our competitive teams, accommodate students who rely on stabling their horses, foster community engagement, and expand opportunities for youth and wellness programs. This investment will solidify Texas Tech’s position as a leader in equestrian excellence and provide transformative experiences for students, athletes, and the community alike.
