Graduate Admissions - FAQ
-
Can I enter the Masters program with a Bachelors degree in a field other than engineering?
Yes, you can but be aware that between 18 and 36 hours of leveling courses may be required, depending upon your Bachelors degree completed. Please refer to the Appendices section of our Graduate Handbook located on our website for a list of the general prerequisites. This list may be adjusted depending on which concentration you plan to pursue.
- For Master's Students Only Do I need to secure a faculty member before I can apply?
No, you do not need to secure a faculty member prior to completing your application, but to receive an Research Assistantship position, that will only come from a faculty member because each faculty manages their own research accounts from the funding they receive. Therefore, it is best to have secured a position prior to coming. - For Doctoral Students Only Why is my application not approved yet?
We do not accept students into the PhD program unless they secure a Research Assistantship position with a faculty member, a Teaching Assistantship from the department chair, or provide proof of full funding. Please reach out to applicable faculty (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/ceweb/faculty/) or the department chair to secure funding. - What are the possibilities of getting funding after securing admission in the form
of Teaching/Research Assistantships in which it will come with a full tuition waiver,
stipend, Health insurance, etc?
Funding is never guaranteed with acceptance into the program. It is best to secure funding prior to arrival and with an assistantship position, you will receive the tuition and health benefits that come with an Research Assistantship/Teaching Assistantship position. - Can I receive an application fee waiver due to financial incapability.
Unfortunately, our departmental policy is to not provide an application fee waiver so if you are able to secure a position from some faculty, you can ask them if their funding will support that fee and provide it for you. - Can I submit my unofficial transcript and Unofficial GRE score during the application
process?
Yes, unofficial transcripts and scores are allowed for the application, but once you arrive and start your program, you are allowed one semester to make sure official documents arrive or you will no longer be able to register for classes. -
Is the GRE required?
No, the GRE is not required as per our Graduate School at this time, but this may change in the future.
- What English exams are acceptable?
The Graduate School has a link that outlines the English exams that are approved and the link to their site is: https://www.depts.ttu.edu/gradschool/admissions/InternationalProspectiveStudents.php -
Can the English exam be waived?
No, but there are exceptions. Please go to this link and on the right side bar you can find the list of counties that are exempt from English Proficiency exams.
- What is the application deadline?
We allow a rolling admission, which means you can apply at any time. In general, starting in the fall term is better in order to secure an assistantship position, but there are times when funding comes available for spring admits. - How much does it cost to attend Texas Tech?
Since tuition and fee charges change annually, the best source of information comes from our Student Business Services Tuition Estimator.
