Kate Hopkins, a graduating senior in the Department of Chemical Engineering, has been selected as the banner bearer for the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering at Texas Tech Universitys spring commencement ceremony.
Hopkins earned the honor by graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA and completing more credit hours at Texas Tech than any other student in her graduating group.
As banner bearer, she will lead her fellow engineering graduates into the ceremony, carrying the banner that symbolizes the Whitacre College of Engineering.
“Im incredibly honored,” Hopkins said. “It represents not just my academic accomplishments, but also the journey Ive had at Texas Tech.”
A native of Texas, Hopkins chose Texas Tech for its strong engineering program and affordability. The university offered her significant scholarship support, making it the most practical choice.
During her time at Texas Tech, Hopkins was an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) student chapter. Through AIChE, she attended multiple conferences and competed in the Chemical Engineering Jeopardy competition, where her team claimed regional championships in three of the four years she competed.
“My favorite experiences here were with AIChE,” Hopkins said. “Being involved on campus helped me make lasting friendships and grow outside the classroom.”
Following graduation, Hopkins will begin her career as a wells engineer at ExxonMobil.
“I wouldnt be where I am without the support of my professors, friends and especially my family,” she said. “To future students: get involved. It makes all the difference.”
