Fashion Camp @ TTU
Fashion Camp 2020—Lubbock Campus
Fashion Camp began in 2008. Since that time, we have had over 400 campers, many of whom have attended multiple years! Former campers have enrolled at Texas Tech in the undergraduate Retail Management program or the Apparel Design and Manufacturing program. Some campers have gone on to complete their master's degrees in Retail Management.
Fashion in 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's
Each year we plan a different curriculum. Staple activities include sewing, crocheting, crafts, textiles, color, and designing your own fashion line. Each day campers participate in a variety of activities that are fun and educational. Each evening campers relax after dinner with activities related to the theme, with the capstone party being Thursday evening which is our annual dance party!
Every day we have many concurrent activities to meet the needs of the campers. While one group is sewing, another group may be working on a craft such as trend boards, making jewelry, or preparing for the theme night. Each night campers dress for the theme night such as the 80s night—we will probably see some shoulder pads that night! Our goal is for the campers to learn about the breadth of the fashion industry in a fun environment. Friday is our annual fashion show with campers modeling the newest fashions from Dillard's for their families and friends. Campers may choose to be day campers or evening campers that stay in the dorm. Our college students stay in the dorms with campers as chaperones.
The Department of Hospitality and Retail Management offers Fashion Camp each summer. This is designed as an Outreach and Engagement activity which includes students from three courses, RTL 3345: Event Management in the Retail Industry, RHIM 3345: Event Management in Hospitality Industry and RHIM 5360: Event Management in the Hospitality Industry. Students in the three courses teach lessons, prepare meals, and plan the details of the camp. During the lecture, students learn about event planning as well as planning age-appropriate activities for campers aged 7-12. Undergraduate students also earn a certification in event management from Cvent.
