Shane Blum and Hyo Jung (Julie) Chang will be honored by Texas Tech University Chancellor’s Council in January
Two Hospitality and Retail Management (HRM) faculty members will receive the Chancellors Council Distinguished Awards this January. Shane Blum, Ph.D., will be awarded the 2024 Chancellors Council Distinguished Teaching Award. Hyo Jung (Julie) Chang, Ph.D., will be awarded the 2024 Chancellors Council Distinguished Research Award. There are only two recipients of each award, and both will receive $5,000 and a medallion.
The awards are funded by gifts to the Chancellors Council, a group of individuals that support and uphold the mission of the university system. Applicants for this award must be nominated for the position to the college and then go through a selection process that includes faculty, associate dean, and former Chancellor review. Applications are then divided into two committees, one for STEM and one for social sciences and the arts.
Blum has served the HRM department for many years. His hotel and restaurant industry expertise allows him to bring a unique perspective to the classroom. Tim Dodd, College of Human Sciences dean, shares how Blum impacts the students he teaches.
“Dr. Blum has excelled as a teacher and mentor to countless students,” Dodd said. “He truly cares about the students and guides them as they begin their careers. Im thrilled to see him earn this well-deserved recognition and appreciate all he does to provide an exceptional experience for our students.”
Chang has established a level of excellence in the field of research. She has led the way in innovation and collaboration within the retail industry. Dodd shares how her research impacts the college and university.
“Dr. Chang is an exceptional researcher, and Im delighted to hear of this recognition,” Dodd said. “She is an exceptional faculty member who collaborates well with faculty from across the university and passes this along to her graduate students. She has worked on various topics and is a wonderful asset to the department and the College of Human Sciences.”
These awards are described as the highest honors given by the Texas Tech University System to faculty members at its component institutions. It is an amazing accomplishment to have not only two faculty members from the College of Human Sciences, but also two from the Hospitality and Retail Management department.
