As parents and students alike are well aware, the cost of higher education is not inexpensive. But, because of TTU K-12s competitive scholarship program, graduates of Texas Tech University High School who are planning to attend Texas Tech University will have a little less of a financial load to worry about.
Each of the 14 students chosen for the scholarship will receive $1,000 per semester, totaling $28,000 in funding. Students are eligible to reapply each year they attend Texas Tech. Students who receive the TTU K-12 competitive scholarship also qualify for in-state tuition.
“We have two types of competitive scholarships for our Texas Tech High School graduates,” said Jared Lay, director of Recruitment and International Partnerships for the Division of eLearning & Academic Partnerships. “We have one application for first-time college students, and we have one for current Texas Tech or transfer students – TTU K-12 grads who are already attending here or at another university and wish to transfer to Texas Tech.”
Twelve of the recipients are Class of 2023 Texas Tech High School graduates. The other two are returning students.
There are four stateside recipients: Clover Doherty, Palo Pinto, Texas; Brenda Hernandez, Anahuac, Texas; Madilyn Howell, Spring Branch, Texas; and Matthew Zarkivach, Petersburg, Texas.
Two recipients are from Bridge Academy, the TTU K-12 partnership in Port-au-Prince, Haiti: Larissa Bellabe, Petion-Ville; and Luc Emile Mertyl, Davie, Florida.
Six scholarship winners are from the Liberty Education partnership in Brazil: Lucas Araujo and Raphael Araujo, both of Limeira, Sao Paulo; Nicolle Vieira de Castro Assumpcao, Rio de Janeiro; and Joao Cameiro, Felipe Korte and Ana Luiza Rocha, all from Porto Velho, Rondonia.
The returning students are Lauren Thompson and Joao Guilherme Leal.
Lay says between the scholarship opportunities and a direct admissions process, high school graduates of TTU K-12 have ample reason to consider Texas Tech for their next educational step.
