    Introduction

    Parent/Guardian: Please read the following Module (or lesson) introduction. This is a brief overview of what your student will be learning for Module 1.

    Module 1: Be a Super Citizen

    Doing the right thing, telling the truth, respecting the needs of others, and being kind are all characteristics of good citizens. These principles can be simple to put into practice, but people sometimes ignore them.

    In this lesson, children will listen to and read about characters and real people who illustrate what it means to be a good citizen. They will also learn how being a good citizen makes a difference at home, at school, and in the community.

    Module Objectives

    • Read and spell high-frequency words and words with short vowel sounds.
    • Read and spell words with long a or i sounds, and understand how silent e changes the vowel sound in words.
    • Learn different sounds for the letters c and g, called the soft c and soft g.
    • Recognize and use the CVC and VCe spelling/sound patterns to read words.
    • Use newly acquired vocabulary.
    • Determine central ideas, topic, supporting details, and use text evidence when reading informational texts.
    • Ask and answer questions while reading to comprehend the text.
    • Read grade-level text aloud with fluency and accuracy.
    • Examine the steps to the writing process.
    • Apply the steps of prewriting and drafting.
    • Examine the structure of a personal narrative.
    • Identify subjects, predicates, and complete sentences.

    How to Proceed

    1. Complete Checkpoint 1.

    2. Read the Module 1 Family Letter.

    3. Click each Week’s folder title to open the folder. Module 1 is comprised of Weeks 1-3.

    4. Each weekly folder is organized by Days (1 to 5). Begin the daily learning activities and daily assignments.

      • Parent/Guardian: Non-graded activities may be checked with the Module 1 Answer Keys, in the folder of the same name. The student will write all Vocabulary words in a Writer’s Notebook for easy reference.

    5. Submit all required assignments. Module 1 assignments include the following:

      • Week 1:
        • Grammar quizzes
        • Spelling-Handwriting worksheets, completed on Days 1-3 and submitted together on Day 3
        • End-of-week Spelling quiz

      • Week 2:
        • Grammar quizzes
        • Spelling-Handwriting worksheets
        • End-of-week Spelling quiz
        • Rough Draft of writing assignment

      • Week 3:
        • Grammar quizzes
        • Spelling-Handwriting worksheets
        • End-of-week Spelling quiz
        • Final Draft of writing assignment

    6. When you have turned in all assignments for Module 1, you may complete the Module 1 Test.

    Please post a brief description of yourself. Include any information that you feel your instructor might find interesting or useful as you work through this course.


    You will submit this assignment using the Text Submission box that appears when you click on the Write Submission button in the assignment submission section. To avoid timing out the system, it is strongly suggested that you complete this assignment in a word processor (such as MS Word, OpenOffice.org, MS WordPad, etc.) first and then copy and paste the completed assignment into the textbox. When ready, click the Submit button to submit your assignment for grading.
