Grammar: Subjects

Grammar card titled Subjects. A sentence tells a complete thought. It has a naming part and an action part. The subject is the naming part of a sentence. The subject tells who or what does or did something. The subject tells whom or what the sentence is about. Example sentence: The brothers race on the beach; the naming part is The brothers.

  • The subject can be one word or more than one word. (Example: The brothers race on the beach; the subject is The brothers.)

When trying to determine what the subject of the sentence is, I ask myself: Who or what does something?

Examples:

  • Cats purr.
  • The tall clown smiled.
  • The big brown bear stands.
