Grammar: Subjects
Read the Subjects graphic to learn more about sentences.
- A sentence tells a complete thought. It has a naming part and an action part.
- The subject is the naming part of a sentence.
- The subject tells who or what does or did something. The subject tells whom or what the sentence is about.
- The subject can be one word or more than one word. (Example: The brothers race on the beach; the subject is The brothers.)
When trying to determine what the subject of the sentence is, I ask myself: Who or what does something?
Examples:
- Cats purr.
- The tall clown smiled.
- The big brown bear stands.
