Spelling-Handwriting
Spelling-Handwriting
Each week you will have a Word List that matches the phonics skill you are working on for the week. You will be tested at the end of the week to see if you learned the spelling patterns with a Spelling Test on Day 5.
This week will focus on words with short a or i sounds. Also, the student will develop handwriting for the letters Ii, Ll, Tt.
To prepare for the lesson:
- Download the Week 1 teaching slides: Spelling-Handwriting (1.1) PowerPoint.
- Download the Week 1 Spelling Handouts.
- You will find detailed instructions to assist with daily teaching slides in the notes section of the PowerPoint; download the Week 1 slide notes for reference.
Now, go through the daily teaching slides for Day 1 with your student.
SLIDE ACTIVITIES
- Review the Sound-Spelling Cards alligator and igloo (slides 3-4) in your online textbook under Learning Cards/Sound-Spelling Cards to help students understand how to say the sounds for this week: short a and i.
- Optional: Give your student a copy of the Week 1 Word List to cut out the spelling word cards and sort the words. Save the cards and the rest of the page for later use.
- After completing slide 5, give your student Short a, i, page 5 from the Spelling Handouts to complete. Set aside to submit for grading on Day 3.
- Handwriting: On slide 6, practice handwriting with Printables: Manuscript Ii, Ll, Tt.
- Model: How to write lowercase i, l, and t. Have children describe what they notice about the letters. (They are all formed by a straight stroke down.)
- Tall and Short: Remind children that when they write a “tall” lowercase letter or a letter with an ascender such as l, the letter should touch all three lines. When they write a lowercase letter without an ascender, such as i, the letter should touch the middle line and the bottom line.
- Check to be sure that children are gripping the pencil correctly.
- Set aside the Handwriting pages to submit for grading on Day 3.
