Writing: Personal Narrative

Illustration titled Be Great When You Participate! Under a cloud with the heading Speakers, a girl stands at the front of the class. Her word balloon says speak loudly, and speak with expression. Below the speaker is another cloud with the heading Listeners. Around this cloud are four people sitting at school desks with captions under them: teacher, Look at the speaker; boy, Sit up and smile; girl with mouth closed, Don't talk; and girl speaking, Ask questions when the speaker is finished.

This year in 2nd grade, we’ll be talking about what it means to be a good citizen and how even the smallest things we can do make a difference. During discussions, remember to follow rules for being a good participant:

  • Speakers: Speak loudly. Speak with expression.
  • Listeners: Look at the speaker. Sit up and smile. Don't talk. Ask questions when the speaker is finished.

We are going to start a Writer’s Vocabulary chart to help us remember important words. You can create this same chart in your Writer’s Notebook. We will be adding words to it often. Adding new words and definitions to the glossary will help you have this information handy when writing.

Writer’s Vocabulary:

  • Glossary – the part of the book that tells the meanings of the words used in the book.

We discussed earlier what it means to be a good citizen. What was your answer? A good citizen is a person who respects others and their property, is helpful and caring, and treats others the way they want to be treated. Have a discussion with someone about more ways you can be a good citizen.
