Foundational Skills
Foundational Skills
The Foundational Skills learning activities focus on a mixture of learning high-frequency words, phonological awareness, and phonics. This is a non-graded learning activity, but it is important to review the material before completing the daily lesson.
To prepare for the lesson:
- Download the Week 1, Day 2 teaching slides: Foundational Skills (1.1) Day 2 PowerPoint.
- You will find detailed instructions to assist with daily teaching slides in the notes section of the PowerPoint; download the Week 1, Day 2 slide notes for reference.
- You will use the same Week 1 Practice Handouts you downloaded on Day 1.
Now, go through the daily teaching slides for Day 2 with your student.
SLIDE ACTIVITIES
- Part 1: Go through the High-Frequency Words you were introduced to yesterday. Using the Spelling Word cards the student cut out and saved from the Week 1 Word List on Day 1, have the child sort the words and go over their definitions.
- Part 2: Replay the Phonological Awareness video on slide 4. Then have the student use what they learned to blend the sounds from the words shown in the pictures on slide 5.
- Part 3: In Phonics, slides 6-10, learn about consonants and words with the short a or i sounds.
