Foundational Skills
Foundational Skills
The Foundational Skills learning activities focus on a mixture of learning high-frequency words, phonological awareness, and phonics. This is a non-graded learning activity, but it is important to review the material before completing the daily lesson.
To prepare for the lesson:
- Download the Week 1, Day 3 teaching slides: Foundational Skills (1.1) Day 3 PowerPoint.
- You will find detailed instructions to assist with daily teaching slides in the notes section of the PowerPoint; download the Week 1, Day 3 slide notes for reference.
- You will use the same Week 1 Practice Handouts you downloaded on Day 1.
Now, go through the daily teaching slides for Day 2 with your student.
SLIDE ACTIVITIES
- Part 1: Go to slide 3, High-Frequency Words. Using the Spelling Word cards the student cut out and saved from the Week 1 Word List on Day 1, have the child play the Card Flip game.
- Part 2: In Phonological Awareness, slides 4-13, listen for the sounds in words, starting with the beginning sound.
- Part 3: In Fluency, slides 14-15, students will practice accuracy and self-correction while reading In a Jam (online textbook: Foundational Skills). Be sure to log into your online textbook first, before using the link.
- Part 4: Multisyllabic Words, slide 16, practice counting syllables in words with short a and i. Then read Jam Bandit (online textbook: Foundational Skills) and apply all the strategies of blending and sounding out learned this week.
