Grammar: Using Sentences

Grammar card titled Using Sentences. A sentence tells what someone or something does or did. A complete sentence has a naming part (subject) and an action part (predicate). If a sentence is missing a subject or a predicate, it is not a complete sentence. Example sentence: Elijah peels an orange; the subject is Elijah and the predicate is peels an orange.

We have learned that sentences are made up of subjects, or who the sentence is about, and predicates, or what the subject is doing.

If the sentence is missing a subject or predicate, it is not a complete sentence.

Example: peels an orange

If the sentence above only says peels an orange, I don’t know who peels the orange.

  • This is the predicate, or the action part of the sentence.
  • The sentence is missing a subject, so it is not a complete sentence.
