Grammar: Word Order in Sentences

Grammar card titled Word Order in Sentences. A sentence makes sense when the word order is correct. When a sentence tells something, the subject (naming part) comes before the predicate (action part). Examples: Incorrect word order: Eats snacks my dog. Correct word order: My dog eats snacks.

A sentence will not make sense if the predicate comes before the subject. The order that words come in a sentence is very important.

To identify whether a complete simple sentence uses the correct word order, ask:

  • Is the first part of the sentence the subject, or naming part?

Let’s look at the Word Order in Sentences graphic.

  • The first part of the sentence, eats snacks, is the predicate.
  • The first part should be the subject, my dog.

The correct order of the sentence should be:

  • My dog eats snacks.
