Essay: Drafting (Part 2)

Illustration of Elements of a Narrative. Beginning: Meet the characters in their world. Characters are people and animals; drawing shows two children. Setting is time and place; drawing shows a house under a shining sun. Middle: The characters face a problem; drawing shows two children standing beside a bike with a flat tire. End: The characters solve the problem; drawing shows the two children holding wrenches as they fix the bicycle.

This is a graded assignment. You will revise your rough draft and turn it in today.

In this Module you will be writing a personal narrative. A personal narrative is a story about something that happened to the person telling the story.

Part 1: Continue Drafting

During the drafting phase of the writing process, your main goal is to get all your ideas down on paper and to give those ideas a structure. So do not worry about creating a perfect narrative!

Continue using the “Personal Narrative (Rough Draft)” handout from Day 4 to complete your rough draft.

Part 2: Review the Rough Draft

As you get done writing the rough draft, review the following questions with a grown-up to make sure you have the main writing elements:

  • Did I…
    • include a beginning, middle, and end?
    • include a conflict and resolution?
    • include a story that tells about something I did or tried to do?
    • use 1st person (I, me, my) and include other characters?
    • use descriptive language?
  • Paragraphs:
    • Introduction (2-3 sentences): Tell about you and what you did to help.
    • Body Paragraph (5 sentences): Tell the events of the story. Provide the who, when, where, what, and how of your story.
    • Conclusion (2-3 sentences): Tell how your action made the world a better place.

When you have finished revising your draft, go to Assignment: Personal Narrative (Rough Draft) (1.2.5) to submit it for grading.
