Generative Vocabulary: Verbs

Vocabulary card titled Words That Describe Actions. Verbs are words that describe actions. They tell what someone or something is doing. If you see a verb that you do not know, you can look it up in the dictionary. Examples: 1, Manuel likes to munch on apples. 2, Kayla grinned at her friend. 3, It's fun to jump in the pool. 4, Ducks float on the pond. 5, The horses gallop on the track. Beside a photo of a tennis ball bouncing is the example sentence, You can bounce the ball; bounce describes the action of the ball.

In the example shown, I know bounce is a verb because it tells what the ball does. If I were unsure, I could check the word’s meaning in a dictionary.

Look at the examples in the sentences:

  • munch
  • grinned
  • jump
  • float
  • gallop

Each of these words describes an exact action.
