Foundational Skills
Foundational Skills
The Foundational Skills learning activities focus on a mixture of learning high-frequency words, phonological awareness, and phonics. This is a non-graded learning activity, but it is important to review the material before completing the daily lesson.
To prepare for the lesson:
- Download the Week 3, Day 1 teaching slides: Foundational Skills (1.3) Day 1 PowerPoint.
- Download the Week 3 Practice Handouts.
- You will find detailed instructions to assist with daily teaching slides in the notes section of the PowerPoint; download the Week 3, Day 1 slide notes for reference.
Now, go through the daily teaching slides for Day 1 with your student.
SLIDE ACTIVITIES
- Part 1: Go through the High-Frequency Words on slides 3-13. After slide 13, complete the Words to Know, page 25 worksheet.
- Part 2: For Phonological Awareness, slides 14-18, let’s play with the sounds in words!
- Part 3: In Phonics, slides 19-23, learn about consonants and words with the long a or i sounds, and how silent e changes the vowel sound in words. For additional help, search for Sound-Spelling cards in your online textbook under Learning Cards/Sound-Spelling Cards. Use an Articulation Video, in your online textbook under Multimedia, to show children how to articulate the /ā/ and /ī/ sounds.
- Sound-Spelling card acorn [slide 20]: Articulation Video
- Sound-Spelling card ice cream [slide 22]: Articulation Video
Continue Phonics by blending letter sounds to make words (slides 24-32), creating word families with the same ending (slides 33-34), and the long vowel sound in words with a VCe pattern (slide 35).
