Essay: Publishing Steps

Illustration of Elements of a Narrative. Beginning: Meet the characters in their world. Characters are people and animals; drawing shows two children. Setting is time and place; drawing shows a house under a shining sun. Middle: The characters face a problem; drawing shows two children standing beside a bike with a flat tire. End: The characters solve the problem; drawing shows the two children holding wrenches as they fix the bicycle.

Note: These are non-graded learning activities, so please do not submit them to the teacher.

In this Module you will be writing a personal narrative. A personal narrative is a story about something that happened to the person telling the story.

When you publish a story, you

  • write your story one more time; and
  • add a cover, pictures, and more to make your story shine.

Part 1: Publishing

To begin the publishing step, be sure to

  • Reread your personal narrative one last time, proofreading to ensure no additional changes are needed.
  • Make a clean copy of your personal narrative using your best handwriting.

After you have made a clean copy of your draft, think about how to present your personal narrative. Download and complete the Publishing Ideas handout to help you determine how you will publish your personal narrative. For example, you might display your writing on backgrounds that give more information about your story, or you might make illustrations to add to your story.

For example, if A Good Deed on a Snowy Day were my story, I might illustrate it with a drawing of Caden and myself shoveling snow. Or I might use a computer to type the story and then add a photo of a snowy day. Or I might simply paste my final draft onto a background that has a snowflake pattern on it. The possibilities are endless!

Part 2: Complete the Final Draft

Finally, you can focus on writing a clean copy of your final draft using the Personal Narrative Essay (Final Draft) pages.

Save your work to continue on Day 4. Remember, your final draft is due on Day 5.
