The Foundational Skills learning activities focus on a mixture of learning high-frequency words, phonological awareness, and phonics. This is a non-graded learning activity, but it is important to review the material before completing the daily lesson.

To prepare for the lesson:

• Download the Week 3, Day 4 teaching slides: Foundational Skills (1.3) Day 4 PowerPoint.
• You will find detailed instructions to assist with daily teaching slides in the notes section of the PowerPoint; download the Week 3, Day 4 slide notes for reference.
• You will use the same Week 3 Practice Handouts you downloaded on Day 1.

Now, go through the daily teaching slides for Day 4 with your student.

• Part 1: On slide 3, High-Frequency Words, play Picture Challenge with your student.
  
  
• Part 2: For Phonological Awareness, slides 4-5, let’s play with the sounds in words!
  
  
• Part 3: In the Phonics Review:
  • Slides 6-9: Review long a and i sounds with VCe syllables, then review soft c and soft g sounds.
  • Slides 10-21: Practice blending letter sounds to make words.
  • Slide 22: Read the words in each line, then read complete sentences.
  • Slide 23: For additional practice, build and blend words together using the letters provided. You may also want to assign Phonics Review, page 31 for independent work.
