Generative Vocabulary: Inflections -ed, -ing

Vocabulary card titled Inflections ed and ing. Add ed to the end of a verb to tell about an action that already happened. Add ing to tell what is happening or will happen. Jump plus ed equals jumped; jump plus ing equals jumping. Examples: 1, past, we planned; present, we are planning; future, we will be planning. 2, past, riders turned; present, riders are turning; future, riders will be turning.

In the examples, you can use jumped to tell about something that happened yesterday. The ending -ed tells you that the action happened in the past.

You can use jumping to tell about something that is happening now or will happen tomorrow. The ending -ing tells you that the action is happening now, in the present, or will happen in the future.

For each word in the table below, say aloud how the verbs change to tell about the past, present, and future.

Note: When a verb ends in a vowel plus a consonant, you have to double the consonant before adding the ending.
